(Updated) Microsoft Information Protection: manage Exact Data Match in Microsoft 365 compliance center

Updated January 12, 2021: Microsoft has updated the rollout timeline below with more details for GCC-High and DoD customers.

You will soon be able to manage Exact Data Match (EDM) from Microsoft 365 compliance center, providing an alternative to using PowerShell.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 67100.

When this will happen

Microsoft will begin rollout in mid-December and expected to complete it by early January.

  • For GCC-High and DoD the rollout will complete in early February.

How this will affect your organization

EDM-based classification enables creation of custom sensitive information types that refer to exact values in a database of sensitive information.

With this update, you will be able to create, edit, and delete EDM schemas and rule packages from Microsoft 365 compliance center > Data Classification. Data hashing and uploading will still require using PowerShell or the command console.

What you need to do to prepare

Visit the Microsoft 365 compliance center to get started.
